Gov’t to Build Factory for Persons with Disabilities

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita to immediately realize the construction of a factory for persons with disabilities.

“I remember that four years ago I got a proposal to build a factory for persons with disabilities. Today, I order the Minister of Social Affairs to complete the project,” President Jokowi said in his remarks during the Commemoration of the 2018 International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Bekasi, Monday (3/12).

Regarding the type of the factory, the President let Minister of Social Affairs to decide, whether it is garment, electronics, or another type of factory.

President Jokowi said that the construction of the factory is a concrete implementation of the law and is a medium for persons with disabilities to pursue their achievement.

In the meantime, President Jokowi also cited several achievements made by persons with disabilities, including achieving the top 5 position in the final medal tally of the 2018 Asian Para Games, with 37 gold medals, a major increase from 9 gold medals achieved in the previous Asian Para Games.

President Jokowi cited other examples of persons with disabilities who excel in other fields, such as Risnawati Utami, the first Indonesian Citizen to be elected as a member of the UN disability rights committee in 2018, Habibie Afsyah, a successful online businessman with income of tens of millions per month, Surya Sahetapy, an activist of the handai tuli community and M. Fahmi Husein, a winner of the best design award at the 2018 National Electrical Design.

“They are source of inspiration for all of us, all Indonesian citizens. These achievements come from their fighting spirit, hard work, and creativity,” President Jokowi said, adding that he invites all persons with disabilities to always be confident, work hard, and make innovations to achieve more remarkable outcomes.

Also present during the event were Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Manpower Hanif Dhakiri, Governor of West Java Ridwan Kamil and Mayor of Bekasi Rahmat Effendi. (EN/RAH/ES)
