Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing and the toll road business entity (BUJT) are currently completing the construction of Kuala Tanjung–Tebing Tinggi–Parapat Toll Road.

The 143.25-kilometer toll road is expected to boost connectivity in North Sumatra Province, especially to facilitate tourists’ access from North Sumatra provincial capital Medan to the Lake Toba Super Priority Tourism Destination (DPSP).

“It will also support the economy of the communities in tourist areas,” Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said on Sunday (04/07).

The toll road consists of six sections with a total investment amounting to Rp13.4 trillion. Constructions of Section 1 to 4 are funded through the Government-to-business Cooperation (KPBU) scheme with state-owned enterprises for toll road PT Waskita Karya for Section 2 and 3 and PT Hutama Karya for Section 1 and 4. As for Section 5 and 6, it will be funded through the State Budget.

The construction of Sections 1 to 4 is expected to be completed by the end of this year with the construction progress of Section 1 Tebing Tinggi—Inderapura with the length of 20.40 km reaching 84.45 percent, Section 2 Inderapura—Kuala Tanjung (18.05 km) at 65.94 percent, Section 3 Tebing Tinggi–Serbelawan (30 km) at 62.68 percent, and Section 4 Serbelawan–Pematang Siantar (28 km) at 41.76 percent.

Meanwhile, the progress of Section 5 Pematang Siantar–Seribudolok (22.30 km) and Section 6 Seribudolok–Parapat (16.70 km) is still in the green book submission stage.

For the record, the Kuala Tanjung—Tebing Tinggi—Parapat Toll Road is part of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) of the Trans Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) and is a continuation of connectivity from the Medan – Kualanamu – Tebing Tinggi (MKTT) Toll Road which has been operational since 2019.

The under-construction toll road will not only serve as a tourist link around Lake Toba but it will also accelerate the connectivity of community’s economy from the industrial, goods, and service sectors in the province since the toll road will be equipped with 6 interchange points, namely in Indrapura, Tebing Tinggi, Serbelawan, Simpang Susun Raya, Seribudolok, and Parapat.
