The Indonesian contingent grabbed 7 gold, 11 silver, and 18 bronze medals and placed in the 13th position at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

The achievement was lower than the target set by Ministry of Youth and Sports, namely the 12th place with 8 gold medals.

“I would like to extend my apologies to all Indonesian people and President Joko Widodo since he ordered us to enter the top 10,” Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo said as quoted from the Ministry’s official website, Monday (10/09).

According to the Minister, the results of the Asian Games will be an evaluation towards the 2024 Paris Olympics. “We will conduct a total evaluation and analysis to all sports at the Asian Games. We have to sit down together and find the best solution,” he added.

Echoing similar sentiments, Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee Raja Sapta Oktohari stated that best efforts in preparing are needed ahead of the Olympics.

“The Paris Olympics is only one year away and qualifications are already underway,” Okto said.

In the meantime, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono—who is also the Chef de Mission (CdM) of Indonesian Contingent for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games—said that there needs to be improvements in terms of facilities and programs leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“We will evaluate our facilities and programs. This is what must be addressed if our target is the Olympics and as far as I know, budget is not a problem,” Basuki remarked.
