The Government has announced it will prepare additional three towers at Wisma Atlet emergency hospital in anticipation of the rising number of COVID-19 patients in Capital Jakarta – the epicenter of the virus outbreak in the country.

Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing has previously revamped four towers out of ten towers at Wisma Atlet for COVID-19 emergency hospital.

“Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing will prepare and revamp three additional towers namely Tower 2, 4 and at Wisma Atlet Kemayoran for COVID-19 emergency hospital,” the Ministry’s Director General of Housing Khalawi AH said.

According to Khalawi, the Government prepares additional three towers to increase the capacity of COVID-19 emergency hospital patient room and provide decent housing for doctors, nurses and medical workers who are on duty 24 hours at the emergency hospital.

As for Tower 2, it will be used as a residence for the team of doctors, nurses and medical workers and has 24 floors with a total of 886 units.

To date, cleaning and minor repairs have been done in Tower 2. Meanwhile, Tower 4 and Tower 5 are located in Block D-10 and will be used for isolation/quarantine (inpatient) spaces for patients with a capacity of 886 units each.

“We estimate that the works to prepare the additional three towers for COVID-19 Emergency Hospital will be completed on Saturday (18/4),” he said, adding that the Ministry has also made a number of changes in the functions of the building on Tower 6 from inpatient rooms to treatment rooms.

In addition, the 1st floor of Tower 6 has been renovated and is now used for emergency installation (IGD), the 2nd floor is for intensive care units (ICU), and the 3rd floor is for recovery rooms.

Meanwhile, the 4th – 24th floors will be used as inpatient rooms whose construction takes into account  negative pressure in the room. Tower 6 has a capacity of 650 units.

“The Ministry continues to strive to provide the best facilities to complement the COVID-19 Emergency Hospital functions. We hope patients who are receiving medical treatment at the Wisma Atlet Emergency Hospital can recover and be discharged soon,” he said.

For the record, the Ministry had prepared four towers at the Wisma Atlet emergency hospital, namely Tower 1, 3, 6 and 7 located in Block D-10, which have been operational since 23 March for COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms.

The Government takes the measure so the COVID-19 referral hospital could focus on treating COVID-19 seriously ill patients. (BKP Ministry of PUPR/EN)
