Gov’t to Target Creating 4.4 Million Employments in Tourism, Creative Economy
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno affirmed his commitment to create 4.4 million employments by 2024.
“I promised to myself and my team that I will give my best to recover jobs lost during the pandemic,” the Minister said on the tenth episode of Podkabs, Cabinet and Cabinet Secretariat’s podcast, aired on Saturday (01/14).
He added that he has several experiences in building and developing businesses which become the main capital to realize his promise.
“As a person who was once unemployed and suffered from lay-off, I am sympathetic towards those who were hardly hit by the pandemic. With my experiences, I want to strive to create jobs and open new opportunities for them,” he said.
He went on to say that when he was laid off from work during a financial crisis 25 years ago, he did not give up. He tried to start new business with limited resources and be able to develop it and employed 30,000 people.
Sandiaga added that in 2022 tourism and creative economy sectors have managed to recover after the 2020 pandemic.
“I am glad that in the past couple years there are new employments available. There are 1.1 million employments by the end of 2022 that also increase people’s standard of living and prosperity in tourism sector,” he said.
On that occasion, the Minister underscored the needs of cooperation from various stakeholders to create 4.4 million employments in 2024. He also stressed on the importance of collaboration between business sector, ministries/institutions, and regional governments to materialize penta-helix model and break the silos.
