Gov’t Transforms Five Islamic State Institutes into Islamic State Universities

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on June 8 issued five Presidential Regulations on the establishment of Islamic State Universities based on the transformation of Islamic State Institutes.

The five Islamic State Institutes (IAIN) that are transformed into Islamic State Universities (UIN) include:

  1. IAIN Batusangkar transformed into UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 84 of 2022 on Mahmud Yunus Islamic State University of Batusangkar;
  2. IAIN Bukittinggi transformed into UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 85 of 2022 on Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Islamic State University of Bukittinggi;
  3. IAIN Pekalongan transformed into UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 86 of 2022 on K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Islamic State University of Pekalongan;
  4. IAIN Padangsidimpuan transformed into UIN Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary Padangsidimpuan as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 87 of 2022 on Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary Islamic State University of Padangsidimpuan; and
  5. IAIN Salatiga transformed into UIN Salatiga as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 88 of 2022 on Islamic State University of Salatiga.

It is stated in the Presidential Regulations that the transformation was carried out to fulfill the demands of scientific and technological development, as well as integration of Islamic sciences and other sciences, and to create high-quality human resources.

Transforming into Islamic State Universities, the five Islamic State Higher Education Institutions can carry out not only Islamic education programs but also other science programs to support the implementation of Islamic science programs in higher education.

“Technical guidance on the management of Islamic science higher education program is provided by a minister who oversees government affairs in the field of religion and technical guidance on other science programs is provided by a minister who carries out government affairs in the field of education,” the regulation reads.

The regulations describe UIN as a higher education institution under a ministry that conducts government affairs in the field of religion. It is also under and responsible to a minister who oversees government affairs in the field of religion.

The five Presidential Regulations have come into force since the date of its promulgation on June 8, 2022. (UN) (FI/MMB)
