Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian Friday (09/12) inaugurated Southwest Papua as the 38th province in the country, at Sasana Bhakti Praja building of Ministry of Home Affairs, Jakarta.

“By the grace of God Almighty, today, Friday, December 9, 2022, located in Jakarta, I, Minister of Home Affairs on behalf of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, hereby inaugurate Southwest Papua province based on Law Number 29 of 2022,” Tito said.

Aside from Southwest Papua, there are also three new provinces in the island of Papua, namely South Papua, Papua Mountains and Central Papua provinces. “We also hope that this will reduce bureaucracy,” Tito said.

The establishment of the provinces is expected to accelerate equitable distribution of development and to improve the welfare of Papuan people and those who reside in Papua.

For the record, the Government and the House of Representatives (DPR) Thursday (12/08) agreed to pass the Bill of the Establishment of Southwest Papua Province into Law Number 29 of 2022. (TGH/UN) (GWH/MMB)
