Indonesia, China Agree to Enhance Concrete Cooperation

Following the conclusion of the 43rd ASEAN Summit, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Friday (09/08) hosted Premier of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang in a bilateral meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

“The Premier stated the Summit and its outputs are exceptionally well. May this achievement strengthen Indonesia’s leadership in the region and the world,” Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi said after the meeting.

According to Retno, President Jokowi during the meeting encouraged China to affirm its commitments to supporting various cooperation and investment in Indonesia.

“President Jokowi conveyed and noted that there was a new investment commitment of US$21.7 billion and a commitment to expand investment of US$44.89 billion which was conveyed during a business meeting in Chengdu,” the Minister said.

Regarding infrastructure cooperation, Retno said that the Government expected that the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train project can be completed immediately and has also invited the Chinese’s private sector and state-owned enterprises in the construction sector to actively participate for the development of Indonesia’s new capital of Nusantara (IKN).

“The President also encouraged China to boost trade cooperation, including by providing support for export list addition such as Indonesian swallow’s nests, markets for durian, as well as agricultural and marine products,” she said.

President Jokowi, Retno continued, also noted that air connectivity between the two countries has not yet reached a maximum capacity.

“President Jokowi expressed hope that there will be additional direct flights connecting important cities in Indonesia and China,” Retno remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/UN) (GWH/EP)
