Indonesia has provided US$ 200 thousand worth in-kind contribution for COVID-19 handling in Myanmar, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi during Pledging Conference to Support ASEAN’s Humanitarian Assistance to Myanmar on Saturday (18/09).

The humanitarian assistance in the form of Indonesian-produced medical equipment including KN95 masks, medical gloves, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are going to be distributed through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre).

Retno underscored that this humanitarian assistance is one of important components to overcome three crises that are occurring in Myanmar including political, economic, and humanitarian crises.

On the Handover Ceremony on 15 September 2021, the AHA Center handed over the first batch of the assistance worth US$ 1.1 million to the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRSC) that will be distributed at the end of September. Besides Indonesia, the General Secretary of ASEAN Lim Jock Hoi also expressed his gratitude to the Government of the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, and the Temasek Foundation for their contribution in the first batch.

During the event, the Special Envoy of ASEAN to Myanmar Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof called on the international community to participate in supporting ASEAN’s efforts in helping Myanmar. He also underscored that the provision of humanitarian assistance is a reflection of the “ASEAN Way” and a commitment to help ASEAN families who need help and support.

For the record, the provision of humanitarian assistance to Myanmar is a follow-up to the Five-Point Consensus agreement at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting held on 24 April 2021 in Jakarta.

The first batch of the assistance, under the theme “Live Saving”, will be distributed starting September 2021. It includes the assistance to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. The second batch, under the theme “Live Sustaining”, will begin in 2022 and covers more diverse humanitarian assistance. (PR of Ministry of Foreign Affairs/UN) (AP/MMB)
