President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated Indonesia’s strong commitment to advancing concrete measures within ASEAN to address various regional crises, including the situation in Myanmar.

The President delivered the statement during a retreat session of the 47th ASEAN Summit held on Sunday (10/26) at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in Malaysia.

“The crises surrounding us have continued to test our resolve, both within our region and among our close partners. The situation in Myanmar remains a serious concern. We are closely monitoring the ongoing developments, including the planned general election [in Myanmar] for December 2025,” he said.

Throughout the political process, the President has consistently urged ASEAN to safeguard the democratic principles and uphold transparency in the country.

The President also stated that the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair [for Myanmar] can continue engaging with all relevant stakeholders, and at an appropriate time, ASEAN may consider deploying an observatory team to help ensure transparency and accountability in the democratic process,” he said.

On that occasion, the Head of State also emphasized the limited progress in implementing the five-point consensus, despite it being agreed nearly five years ago and underscored the continued relevance of the consensus as the primary reference for peace and stability initiatives in Myanmar, especially with the general election approaching.

“We must continue to advocate for a ceasefire to provide the necessary space for meaningful dialogue. Indonesia stands ready to support the Chair of ASEAN in fostering a fully inclusive process,” he said.

In addition to the situation in Myanmar, the Head of State also voiced concern over the heightened tension between Thailand and Cambodia, noting that persistent irreconcilable differences may disrupt stability and threaten peace across the ASEAN region.

“I appreciate the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar in facilitating dialogue and ceasefire efforts. We urge both sides to resolve their differences in the ASEAN spirit as one family,” he remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat) (DH/EP)
