Indonesia Receives 3 Million Doses of Moderna Vaccine from United States

In a bid to achieve herd immunity, the Indonesian Government, on Sunday (11/7), received 3 million doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine from the United States Government, via Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten province.

Alhamdulillah, Thank God, today, Indonesia has received 3,000,060 doses of Moderna vaccine. It’s due to the international cooperation of the United States Government through the COVAX Facility multilateral channel. This is the first shipment of the Moderna vaccine from the United States Government,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi said virtually in her press statement welcoming the arrival of the vaccine, Sunday (11/07).

Based on the communication with the United States Government, including its foreign minister and national security adviser, the Minister said, the United States is committed to providing 4,500,160 doses of vaccine to Indonesia through a dose-sharing scheme.

The Minister expressed appreciation to the United States Government for the vaccine, as well as other parties involved such as the COVAX Facility, WHO (World Health Organization), GAVI (the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization), CEPI (the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund).

“Indonesia has consistently supported the dose-sharing scheme in order to accelerate the accomplishment of the principle of equal access to vaccines for all countries,” she said.

With the arrival of the Moderna vaccine today, Retno said, Indonesia has secured as many as 122,735,260 million doses of vaccine, both in finished form and raw materials.

Those vaccines include 108.5 million doses of Sinovac vaccine, mostly in the form of raw materials; 8,236,800 doses of AstraZeneca in the form of a ready-made vaccine from the COVAX Facility as well as 998,400 doses from Japan; 2 million doses of Sinopharm vaccines in finished form, including 500,000 doses from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Government; and 3,000,060 doses of Moderna vaccine from the United States Government in finished form.

For the record, the mRNA-based Moderna vaccine has received an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) on 2 July 2021. (SLN/UN) (FI/MUR)
