Indonesian National Police Expected to Maintain Unity, Carry Out Reforms, President Jokowi Says

Duties of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) will soon be more difficult, yet President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo believes Polri will be able to fulfill their duties by implementing two tasks: maintaining unity and solidarity in the institution and having courage to reform because it is the key to face the future.

The statement was made by President Jokowi in a celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Polri and communal fast-breaking with the family of Polri on Friday (1/7), at the Main Meeting Room of the Headquarter of Polri, in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.

The reforms, the President added, is conducted on every sector from upstream to downstream, from the recruitment system to the service to the people, from changing the mentality and mindset of the Polri apparatus to changing their actions.

“The goal is changing the attitudes and actions of Polri apparatus to become more professional and responsible apparatus with integrity. I believe it will strengthen people’s trust in the Polri,” President Jokowi said.

The President hopes the reforms within the Polri is reflected concrete and real in their services to the people.

No more illegal retribution, case broker, and discrimination in the law enforcement process and in the efforts to protect the citizen, the President firmly said.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also reminded the Polri to suppress their sectoral ego and strengthen the cooperation among the institutions, including with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Attorney General Office.

“Crime can only be fought and eliminated when we are united and the law enforcer institutions cooperate,” President Jokowi said.

Besides congratulating the leaders and members of the Polri, the President in the event which took the theme “By Strengthening Solidarity, Professionalism, and Mental Revolution, Polri is Ready to Assist Government’s Policies” also thanked Polri apparatus in charge of maintaining security, traffic, and manage this year’s mudik (an annual exodus ahead of Eid al-Fitr).

“I want to appreciate Polri for bravely fighting against terrorism, drug dealers, and other crimes that have been on the rise lately,” the President said.

The President also hopes and prays that Polri will be able to reform in facing future competitions and make the institution be loved by the Indonesian.

“May Polri be blessed in its 70th Anniversary that make them become more reliable, more beloved by the people, and the internal reform in the Polri will be accelerated,” President Joko Widodo concluded.

First Lady Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Working Cabinet Ministers, the leaders of high state institutions, Indonesian National Police (Polri) Chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti, Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, several officials and apparatus of Polri also attended the event. (RMI/UN) (RAS/EP/YM/Naster)
