President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas has awarded “Star of Merit: Order of the State of Palestine” to Ambassador Hasan Kleib, who is currently serving as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN, WTO, and other International Organizations in Geneva.

The award was given to Ambassador Hasan Kleib for his great services and significant role in supporting the Palestinian cause in the international world when he served as Director General of Multilateral Affairs of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, as well as in his current position [as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, WTO and other International Organizations in Geneva].

The awarding ceremony was held at the UN Office in Geneva on Friday (28/6) and attended by Ambassadors of Arab countries, ASEAN and member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), including the Assistant of Secretary General of the OIC.

President Mahmoud Abbas in his personal message read during the ceremony stated that the award is an acknowledgment of Ambassador Kleib’s extraordinary role in advancing and strengthening relations and friendship between Palestine and Indonesia, as well as a sincere appreciation for the Ambassador’s contribution in supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people to gain freedom and independence.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, added that he was specifically instructed by President Mahmoud to present the award to Ambassador Kleib.

“This is a form of respect for Indonesia and its people, through the real contribution of Ambassador Kleib, the best diplomat and the best ambassador Indonesia ever has,” said Ambassador Mansour.

He added that the award is the only best thing Palestinian people could give and hoped that it will be truly meaningful and be remembered throughout Ambassador’s Kleib careers.

Ambassador Kleib in his remarks said that this moment was very special for himself and for Indonesia. It was considered to be even more special because it was given by Palestine, a country who is currently struggling to gain its independence, he added.

“Although the award is given in a personal capacity, this is also an acknowledgment of the efforts and contributions of the Indonesian Government for the struggle of the Palestinian people,” Kleib said.

He also emphasized that over the past 4 years, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has stepped up Indonesia’s efforts and contributions in fighting for the rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent and sovereign country.

He went on to say that under the leadership of President Jokowi, Indonesia will remain a strong supporter of the longstanding Palestinian cause. (Directorate of Information of Ministry of Foreign Affairs/ES)
