PM Narendra Modi Underscores Indonesia-India Strategic Cooperation for Shared Prosperity
Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi reiterated India’s commitment to elevating the comprehensive strategic partnership with Indonesia to greater heights. PM Modi made this statement during a joint press conference after holding a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto and his delegation at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday (07/07).
“In the past few years, Indonesia and India have enjoyed a new energy in bilateral relations, a renewed sense of confidence, and deepening cooperation,” stated PM Modi.
PM Modi underscored that the comprehensive strategic partnership agreed upon by the two countries in 2018 continues to flourish through strengthened cooperation across various sectors, ranging from defense, development, and technology, to culture and education. According to him, the meeting with President Prabowo will serve as a new milestone that further strengthens bilateral ties.
“We have taken important measures to enhance cooperation in defense, development, technology, culture, and education sectors. I am confident that today’s meeting will mark a new chapter in the Indonesia-India partnership and bring a positive [impact],” added PM Modi.
In the security and defense sectors, PM Modi noted that both countries agreed to boost cooperation in defense exchanges, disaster management, and industry, as well as to strengthen maritime security collaboration in the Indian Ocean.
“As two neighboring maritime nations, we have also agreed to enhance cooperation in the blue economy, port development, and maritime trade,” continued PM Modi.
He also emphasized that improving public welfare remains a primary focus of the Indonesia-India cooperation. “We share similar programs regarding nutritious meals and aid distribution in Indonesia. Now, we are taking that cooperation to a higher level,” he said.
PM Modi further stated that the agreement signed by the two countries is expected to expand access to quality healthcare for Indonesians. “High-quality and affordable medicines from India will become increasingly accessible to Indonesian citizens,” he said.
In the technology sector, both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), telecommunications, digital infrastructure, and the development of the startup ecosystem. PM Modi further announced that Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore will open a campus in Indonesia.
“This initiative will bring immense benefits to the people of the ASEAN region,” continued PM Modi.
He also outlined the cooperation in strengthening supply chains for critical minerals and steel, integrating India’s UPI payment system with Indonesia’s payment system, and preserving cultural heritage through the Prambanan Temple conservation project, which he will inaugurate alongside President Prabowo in Yogyakarta.
“We are very pleased that India’s UPI will be integrated with Indonesia’s payment system. This initiative will foster the ease of doing business and [enhance tourism],” he said.
Concluding his statement, PM Modi expressed his confidence that the relations built upon a shared cultural heritage, mutual trust, and a vision of prosperity would bring substantial benefits to both nations while supporting the realization of the Golden Indonesia (Indonesia Emas 2045) vision and the Developed India (Viksit Bharat 2047) vision.
