President Jokowi Issues Regulation on Strengthening Religious Moderation
In a bid to improve national integrity and the quality of the people’s life, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Monday (09/25) signed Presidential Regulation Number 58 of 2023 on Strengthening Religious Moderation.
The regulation notes that diversity of religions and beliefs is God’s gift to Indonesia which serves as the foundation of the behavior of the people and the country and occupies an important and strategic position in the life of the people and the nation.
“This Presidential Regulation is intended as a guideline for the Central Government, regional governments, and religious communities in order to strengthen religious moderation,” Article 2 of the regulation reads.
The regulation further states that strengthening religious moderation is carried out to strengthen religious viewpoints, attitudes, and practices in a moderate manner to strengthen brotherhood and togetherness among religious communities; strengthening religious harmony and communion; harmonization of religious and cultural relations; improving the quality of religious life services; as well as developing the community’s economy and religious resources.
“Strengthening religious moderation is carried out by the Central Government and regional governments in a planned, systematic, coordinative, collaborative, and sustainable manner,” the regulation reads.
The Presidential Regulation applies from the date of its promulgation and is promulgated by Minister of State Secretary Pratikno on September 25, 2023. (UN) (GWH/LW)
