President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has affirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and Mozambique in the fields of economics and development.

The statement was made by President Jokowi in a bilateral meeting with President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Jacinto Nyusi at the Office of the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Maputo, the Republic of Mozambique, Wednesday (08/23).

“Indonesia remains committed to bolstering the partnership with Mozambique through concrete cooperation in both economic and developmental domains,” the President said.

According to the President, the cooperation is considered essential as Mozambique holds a significant position as a close friend of Indonesia and serves as Indonesia’s first Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) counterpart in the African region.

In the investment sector, President Jokowi welcomed the investment plans for Indonesia’s management of oil and gas in Mozambique and the expansion of investment in the energy sector.

“I welcome the investment plan for end-to-end gas management by Indonesian State-owned Enterprises and the expansion of investment in the power generation sector, as well as the production and distribution of gas sales by Indonesian private companies,” the President said.

Furthermore, the President also called for the establishment of Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between the two countries and urged the relevant ministries to expedite the process.

On that occasion, the Head of State pointed out that the two nations have mutually agreed to enhance collaboration in improving Mozambique’s healthcare resilience through the procurement of vaccines, medicines, and essential medical equipment.

“I seek the support of President Nyusi for the Indonesian vaccine registration process,” he said.

The President also reiterated that Indonesia continues to be committed to strengthening development cooperation with Africa through a grand five-year developmental plan for Africa.

“Indonesia is currently in the process of finalizing a comprehensive development plan for the upcoming five years in Africa targeting key sectors like health, food, energy, and other sectors that hold significance for the interest of Mozambique,”

In the meeting, the two countries formally signed a number of cooperation agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding on the Control of Drugs and Biological Products, and a Letter of Interest for Bilateral Cooperation in the Defense Sector. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (RIF/LW)
