On his third day of working visit to Southeast Sulawesi province, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Tuesday (05/14), inaugurated Ameroro Dam in Konawe regency, which will play an important role in preventing water crisis.

“We are aware of water crisis in a number of countries; people struggle to find water. Water is crucial for our lives; thus, we should not let it flow to the sea without being utilized,” he said after the inauguration.

Ameroro dam was constructed in 2020 using a budget of Rp1.57 trillion and completed at the end of 2023. The newly-inaugurated infrastructure is expected to bring greater benefit in reducing flood around Konawe area compared to the budget spend to build it.

“With a capacity of 88 million m3, this is a very large dam with an inundation area of 398 hectares. It can also reduce flooding, mitigating the floods that previously occurred in the areas around Konawe,” he said adding that the dam is also expected to attract more tourists in the surrounding regencies.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also inaugurated the infrastructure development project of the National Tourism Strategic Areas (KSPN) in Wakatobi regency which was completed in November last year. The project which used a budget of Rp96.5 billion is projected to improve tourism sector and drive the national economy.

“For the tourism strategic area in Wakatobi, the arrangement has been completed, including the town square, the Puncak Toliamba area, and the Sombu Dive area, all of which have been improved. We hope that this will improve tourism in Wakatobi regency,” President Jokowi stated.

After the inauguration, President Jokowi will head to North Kolaka regency using the Airforce’s Super Puma helicopter. In that regency, he is slated to visit Lacaria Central Market to inspect prices of food commodities and hand out assistances to market traders.

Afterwards, the President will distribute the Government’s rice reserve to beneficiaries in Alun-Alun Kirambu Tennis Court before returning to Jakarta from Haluoleo Airforce Base. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (TGH/UN) (RAS/MUR)
