President Jokowi Applauds Joint SAR Team’s Efforts on Sriwijaya Air SJ 182 Evacuation

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, on Wednesday (20/1) conducted an inspection at the emergency command post for evacuation of Sriwijaya Air SJ 182, in Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, Wednesday (20/01).

“I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation, the highest appreciation to the joint SAR Team consisting of Ministry of Transportation, the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and KNKT (the National Transportation Safety Committee), and all stakeholders that I can’t possibly mention one by one, for their strong efforts since the beginning of the accident until now,” the President said.

For the record, the last contact of the aircraft en route from Jakarta to Pontianak was on Saturday (9/1), at 14:40 Western Indonesian Time. Later, the debris of the aircraft were found in the waters of the Thousand Islands.

President Jokowi stated that the joint team has succeded in finding large and small parts of the aircraft body, along with the black box. “We just have to wait for the CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder),” he said.

The President further said that passenger safety is the most important matter in transportation. “Therefore, I order an immediate follow-up, both by the KNKT and by Ministry of Transportation, especially on the inspection and supervision of aircrafts that will fly for the sake of public safety, for the safety of passengers,” he said.

On the occasion, the President also witnessed the handover of compensation to the victims’ families. State-owned insurance company Jasa Raharja provided Rp50 million for each family of the victims, while Sriwijaya Air’s compensation reached Rp1.25 billion.
