That is a poem read by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo when delivering remarks on the 92nd anniversary of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) held at An-Nur Grand Mosque, Pekanbaru, Riau, Wednesday (9/5).

On that occasion, the President expressed his appreciation that NU has been the guardian of Islamic middle path (wasatiyyat Islam) over the last 92 years.

“Wasatiyyat Islam which always prioritizes togetherness, harmony and unity. Islam that is rahmatan lil alamin—a blessing for the universe,” said the President.

One appreciation to wasatiyyat Islam shown by the Government, President Jokowi continued, is by the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 22 of 2015. “Since the issuance, every October 22 we commemorate the Day of Santri (Islamic student),”  he added.

The President also said that the Government will continue to improve the welfare of the people.

“Therefore, the Government will continue to develop people’s economy and strengthen the nation’s character,” he said.

In his closing remarks, President Jokowi congratulated NU for the anniversary. The President again read a poem followed by applause from the audience.

Meeting a Disable Child

After delivering his remarks, President Jokowi then took time to meet Bulan Karunia Rudiyanti, a nine-year-old disabled student.

Last March, Bulan sent a letter to President Jokowi conveying her limitations and wished to have a wheelchair. The President immediately sent a wheelchair for her.

President Jokowi also advised her to continue study hard. Bulan then expressed her gratitude directly to the President. “Thank you very much Pak,” she said. (BPMI / EN) (STU/MMB/Naster)
