ASEAN needs to develop a travel corridor carefully in a measurable way, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“(We can) start with the essential business travel corridor based on strict health protocols,” the President said during the 36th ASEAN Virtual Summit from the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java province, Friday (26/6).

In the meantime, speaking to reporters after joining the President at the summit, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that the ASEAN travel corridor is crucial to accelerate the ASEAN economy as well as to realize the strategic meaning of the ASEAN community, both in the region and in the world.

“President Jokowi called on ASEAN leaders to immediately assign their ministers to start discussing the ASEAN travel corridor,” said Retno.

In addition, Retno continued, the President also pointed out the importance of digital connectivity, especially for e-commerce, e-health, e-learning, including expanding access for MSMEs to enter digital platforms.

On that occasion, Indonesia, Retno said, also underlined that the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) this year has a strategic meaning for economic recovery efforts and also serves as a momentum for strengthening economic resilience in the region post-COVID-19.
