President Jokowi Attends 11th ASEAN-UN Summit, 4th RCEP Summit

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, on the last day of the series of the 37th ASEAN Summit, attended several virtual conferences from Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, including the 11th ASEAN-the United Nations (UN) Summit and the 4th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit.

The RCEP is a free trade agreement that involved 15 countries in the region. The agreement aims to open access to markets, to provide facilities for trade and investment, and to promote regional economic integration.

Amidst efforts made by the Governments to rebuild the economy as the impacts of COVID-19, the RCEP agreement is predicted to build trust of the business sector, to maintain stability of the industry and regional and global supply chain, and to support the region in establishing multilateral trading system which is open, inclusive, and based on rules.

The 37th ASEAN Summit will conclude with a closing ceremony later in the afternoon. In the ceremony, the chairmanship for the next term will be transferred from Vietnam to Brunei Darussalam.

For the record, the Summit is opened on Thursday (12/11) hosted by Vietnam as the Chair of ASEAN in 2020.

The series discussed joint efforts to prevent wider impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the ASEAN region. The Summit also discussed priorities in regional economic development with partner countries to overcome the economic and social impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (BPMI/UN)
