President Jokowi Attends 2016 ASEAN-Russia Summit

President Jokowi attends the Reception of ASEAN-Russia Summit on Thursday (19/5) evening, at the Galaxy Centre, Sochi

President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, all ASEAN leaders, and President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin on Friday (26/5) morning local time at the Radisson Blu Congress Center, Sochi, attended the Summit Leaders Meeting to discuss further measures on the cooperation between ASEAN and Russia.

Prior to the meeting, the opening of the 2016 ASEAN-Russia Summit in celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia partnership cooperation was held.

According to a press release of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (17/5), this year’s ASEAN-Russia Summit adopts the theme “Moving Towards a Strategic Partnership for Mutual Benefit”.

During the Summit, ASEAN countries and Russia are expected to discuss several measures to strengthen partnership cooperation, reduce development gap, improve connectivity, and bring concrete results to improve people’s welfare.

“At the Summit, President Jokowi will discuss a number of issues, among others, progress in regional security architecture; enhancement in ASEAN-Russia economic cooperation which covers energy connectivity, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM), and business to business partnerships; regional and global issues: counter terrorism and issues of the Middle East and immigration; the development of interregional relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO); and strengthening people to people contacts,” as cited by the press statement of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Before attending the Summit, President Jokowi is scheduled to have business meetings with the CEO of Rosneft Igor Sechin and CEO of Alpha Pacific Group Oleg Gobulin at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sochi.

After a series of programs at the 2016 ASEAN-Russia Summit, the President will head to Adler International Airport to return to Jakarta via Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, and is expected to arrive in Jakarta on Saturday (21/5).

Accompanying the President during the Summit were Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Darmin Nasution, Minister of Trade Thomas Lembong, and Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki. (TKP/UN) (RAS/EP/YM/Naster)
