President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Tower and the commemoration of 43rd Anniversary of MUI in Jakarta, Thursday (26/7). The President believes that plan to build a 17-storey Tower on 18 hectares of land will be completed through the concept of waqf (Islamic endowment) funds.

“I fully support the construction of MUI tower and its completion so MUI has its own building in the future,” the President said.

In another part of his speech, the President reminded all that Indonesia’s greatest asset is unity and brotherhood. “Therefore, on this blissful occasion, let me invite all of us to continue to build our ukhuwah islamiyah (brotherhood) and ukhuwah wathoniyah (nationalism) because our greatest assets are unity, brotherhood, and harmony,” the President said.

God’s mercy and blessing to Indonesian nation, according to the President, is various tribes, religions, and traditions from Sabang to Merauke and from Miangas to Rote Island.

Those differences, the President further explained, are in the forms of various clothings, traditions, customs and greetings. “This is once again the God’s mercy to the people of Indonesia and let us safeguard them together. Do not let our unity, harmony, brotherhood cracked because of the issue of fiesta of democracy,” the President added and revealed the problems that usually occur are related to regional heads election and presidential election.

The fiesta of democracy that takes place every five years, according to the President, will bring down very big social cost if our brotherhood, harmony, ukhuwah, become cracked because of the elections of regent, mayor, governor, and president.

“Let us together have good prejudice to think positively, develop loving thoughts,” the President added reiterating the message delivered by K.H Amin Ma’ruf to develop khusnu tafahum (positive thinking) not su’u tafahum (negative thinking) in order to keep our relations strong.

For the record, the construction of MUI Tower is sourced from waqf, infaq (donation), alms, and Sharia Mutual Fund scheme and is targeted to be completed prior to MUI’s National Meeting in 2020.

The construction of MUI Tower aims to meet the increased activities and programs as it organizes 12 commissions and 10 institutions in addition to daily leaders and the Advisory Council.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Central MUI K.H. Ma’ruf Amin, Former Vice President Try Sutrisno, Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko, Chairman of the Central MUI Advisory Board Din Syamsudin. (AGG/EN) (MUR/MMB/YM/Naster).
