President Jokowi Attends NTB Reconstruction Program Roll Call

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Monday (3/9) led a roll call of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Reconstruction program, at Gunung Sari Football Field, West Lombok Regency, NTB Province attended by 2,250 volunteers from various backgrounds.

In his directives, the President asserted that emergency response phase in NTB is over, and it is continued with the rehabilitation and reconstruction process. The first phase is reconstruction of public facilities, such as markets, Community Health Centers (Puskesmas), schools, mosques and mushollas (muslim prayer-rooms).

“Yesterday I saw that some of those (facilities) have been constructed under the supervision of Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing,” the President added.

For the record, yesterday, the President distributed aid to reconstruct 5,293 residents houses that are severely, moderately, and lightly damaged by Lombok quake.

“We must inspect the condition on the ground, and verify the damages in order to confirm that the aid is distributed to those who are in need, and it takes time. Therefore, there were only 5,293 houses (receiving the aid),” he added.

The Head of State instructed the volunteers to help residents in reconstructing their houses. The President also suggested to build earthquake-resistant houses for them.

“We know that NTB is included in the “ring of fire”, and we know that there was also a major earthquake back in 1979,” the President said.

Therefore, the President added, the reconstruction process will be managed and led by Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing and supported by young engineers as well as engineering students. Thus, the residents are guided to build earthquake-resistant houses that apply earthquake-resistant structures.

To accelerate the rehabilitation and reconstruction process in NTB, President Jokowi affirmed that the Government has issued Presidential Instruction Number 5 of 2018 which stipulates that rehabilitation and reconstruction process will be led by Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.

“I will monitor and check it from time to time, so that NTB can return to its normal state, along with its economic condition and daily lives of the residents,” the President said.

Also on that occasion, President Jokowi expressed his appreciation for all Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI)/Indonesian National Police (Polri) officers, volunteers be it individual volunteers, those from State-Owned Enterprises, universities, Non-governmental Institutions, regional governments, and all civil servants who have contributed their energy and thoughts.

“I thank you for your participation and hard work, and for showing solidarity to our brothers and sisters in NTB,” he added.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing who attended the event reported that in the implementation of Presidential Instruction Number 5 of 2018, as many as 291 out of 972 public facilities damaged by the quake have been verified. Rehabilitation and reconstruction process has been conducted to 56 buildings, including 40 schools, 4 mushola, 3 markets, and 8 Puskesmas.

In the meantime, in a bid to accelerate rehabilitation and reconstruction of 125,000 houses, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono mentioned that his ministry has verified 32,800 houses consist of 11,400 lightly damaged houses, 3,600 moderately damaged houses, and 17,800 severely damaged houses. The Minister also said that earthquake-resistant houses adapting the Healthy Modest Instantaneous House (RISHA) design have been constructed in 20 locations in order to give example for the residents.

“Building materials stores  in sub-districts will be open this week to facilitate the distribution and ensure the availability of the materials , and maintain them at affordable price which will be coordinated by the NTB Chamber of Commerce and Industry,” the Minister explained.

Basuki added that the target is to complete the rehabilitation and reconstruction within the next 6 months which process will involve quake-affected residents assisted by the volunteers, young engineers, and engineering students. As for reconstruction of public facilities, it is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 and will be carried out by Stated-Owned Enterprises collaborating with local constructors.

Minister Basuki asserted that with the spirit of mutual cooperation, all parties determine to implement the Presidential Instruction properly to accelerate rehabilitation and reconstruction of public facilities and residents’ houses in NTB Province.
