President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Monday (01/09) attended the Nusantara Islamic Tradition Festival (FTIN) at the Diponegoro Stadium, Banyuwangi regency, East Java province. This festival is a part of events to celebrate the 100-year commemoration of the Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

Previously, the President and his entourage arrived at Banyuwangi International Airport at around 17.30 Western Indonesian Time before attending the festival.

“I would like to invite Muslims all over the country, especially Nahdlatul Ulama members, to take part in protecting and preserving the diverse cultural wealth of the archipelago, to make use of cultural arts as part of da’wah and symbols to build civilization, to keep it alive and adaptive in facing the progress of the times,” the President said.

The President stated that art and culture are not only for the sake of performance but also contain messages of life to guide us to remember the magnificence of the God almighty as well as to encourage us in doing good deeds and prevent us from doing evil deeds.

The President also underscored that the nation must learn from the past religious scholars such as the Wali Songo who chose the path of culture in carrying out Islamic da’wah and contributed majorly to the nation’s rich civilization.

“Thanks to the wisdom of the Islamic scholars, our country has a variety of cultural arts with a strong Islamic style,” he added.

The President expressed appreciation for the festival as it shows and reintroduces the rich Islamic tradition in the country while at the same time showing concern and love for the nation’s cultural wealth.

He also thanked the Nahdlatul Ulama for their constant role in spreading tolerance and harmony.

After attending the festival, the President and his entourage will head back to Jakarta via the Banyuwangi International Airport. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/TGH/UN) (FI/LW)
