President Jokowi Attends the 2017 National Livestock Jamboree
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo argued that economically, breeding goat or cattle generates profits as well. The President pointed to himself that ten months ago he bought 5 goats, consisting of 3 females and 2 males. After 10 months, now he has 11 goats. “I think, this goat is pretty fat and not too skinny. This one was born 2 months ago,” President Jokowi pointed at his goat when attending the 2017 National Livestock Jamboree at the Graha Wisata Camping Ground (Buperta), in Cibubur, East Jakarta, Sunday (24/9) afternoon.
The Government, the President further explained, continues to observe how to build a livestock industry such as in the form of a large corporation owned by the people, the farmers who are consolidated within an organization. “Either in the forms of limited liability companies (PT), cooperatives, or combined farms in large numbers,” the President said. Thus, the President continued, it is really profitable and provides enormous benefits to the community.
On that occasion, President Jokowi invited Sugiharto, a breeder from Purworejo who has 206 goats, in which initially he only had 6 goats.
Pak Sugiharto, how long did it take for you to have 206 goats?
“10 years,” Sugiharto replied.
How much does it cost for 1 goat now? 1 million rupiah? Let’s say 1 million, it means 200 million rupiah, you are already a millionaire. Do you only breed goats or run other business as well?
“Previously, I worked but already quit, now breed goats,” Sugiharto explained.
“It means that the workers quit from their job and it is better to be breeders, correct?”
Earlier, Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman, in his report, said the 2017 National Livestock Jamboree was followed by about 1,200 farmers and stakeholders. The event was enlivened by eating 107 suckling goats and broke the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) record.
The series of Jamboree activities have been held from 22 September, enlivened with contests and arts shows of Garut sheep, Kaligesing goats contest, livestock exhibition by cattle ranchers, local chickens, ducks, and rabbits.
According to the Minister of Agriculture, the event seeks to change the mindset, from self-sufficiency in food to self-sufficiency in protein. “Because we can gain the protein from sheep, goats, and so on, in which, traditionally, it is known only for self-sufficiency in beef,” the Minister said.
In addition to Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman, the event was also attended by Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Presidential Chief of Staff Teten Masduki, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, and Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo. (FID/JAY/ES) (MUR/YM/Naster).
