President Jokowi Calls for Economic, Food Security Strengthening in ASEAN-GCC Summit
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Friday (10/20) called for strengthening of economy and food security during the opening of ASEAN-GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Summit, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The President stated that ASEAN and the GCC should make the most of economic potential through balanced, open, and fair investment and trade through the establishment of ASEAN-GCC trade framework, industrial development, recognition of halal certification and development of halal tourism.
In addition, he said that food supply chain security needs to continue to be maintained through cooperation in agricultural and food technology as well as harmonization of agricultural commodity standards.
“We must strengthen energy security through a mutually beneficial and sustainable partnership that will also speed up energy transition,” he added.
In the speech, President Jokowi also raised the issue of migrant workers protection. He affirmed ASEAN’s commitment to provide better protection for migrant workers amidst global uncertainty.
“I call for your support,” he asked the leaders of GCC countries.
The President also urged for immediate cessation of all forms of violence. He added that humanitarian issue must become a priority. Therefore, ASEAN and GCC countries should stand together to halt the escalation and to address the root problem, which is Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
“It must be resolved based on the agreed-upon international parameters. ASEAN and GCC must stand in a clear and solid position to support solutions for Palestine perpetual peace,” he remarked. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (RAS/MUR)
