President Jokowi Calls for Investigation into Deaths of 2 University Students

President Jokowi, accompanied by State Secretary Minister and Cabinet Secretary, meets reporters after Friday Prayer, at the Baiturrahman Mosque, Presidential Palace area, Jakarta, Friday (27/9).

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered an investigation into the deaths of Randi and Yusuf Qardhawi, both students of Halu Oleo University, Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi following a rally staged at the Southeast Sulawesi Regional Parliament Building, Thursday (26/9).

Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. I, on behalf of the Government, would like to convey our profound condolences on the passing of Randi and Yusuf Qardawi. Both of them were students at Halu Oleo University, Kendari,” President Jokowi told reporters after Friday prayer, at the Baiturrahman Mosque, Presidential Palace area, Jakarta, Friday (27/9).

Randi, the President stated, died from a gunshot wound during the rally while Yusuf Qardhawi died after receiving treatment at the hospital. “May everything that Randi and Yusuf Qardhawi fight for brings benefit to this nation and they be given a noble place on His side,” he said.

President Jokowi has also ordered the National Police (Polri) Chief to investigate and inspect the entire Polri ranks. “The National Police Chief told me that there was no order to carry firearms during the rally,” he said.

The President also ordered the Police to refrain from repression in handling rallies.

To this date, the President said, the shooter had not been identified. “Do not second guess before the investigation is over,” he stated. (UN/ES)
