President Jokowi Calls for Prudent Management at Freeport

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called on management of copper and gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia to manage the company prudently.

“I urge Mr. Tony Wenas [President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia] to manage the Freeport prudently because the company brings a significant impact not only to Mimika regency but also to Papua province,” the President said during a meeting with the company’s employees in Mimika regency, Wednesday (08/31).

According to the President, PT Freeport Indonesia has contributed to 68 percent of Mimika regency’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of and 34 percent of Papua GDRP.

President Jokowi also applauded the company for generating revenues of up to US$ 7.5 billion last year.

President Commissioner of PT Freeport Indonesia Richard Adkerson said that 30 years ago the workforce at PT Freeport Indonesia were mostly expatriates, while today 98 percent of the workforce are Indonesians and more than 40 percent are native Papuans. (TGH/UN) (RI/EP)
