President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday (21/11) ordered his Cabinet ministers to simplify regulations in pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries.

Simplifying the regulations are expected to boost the growth of the industries and to provide drugs at lower prices, the President added.

“Based on the report, 95% of drug raw materials still depend on imports. We must put an end to this,” said the President in his introductory remarks in a limited meeting on the National Health Program at the Presidential Office, Jakarta.

The President also called for more incentives for research in the country and innovation  done by local researchers to develop drugs and create cutting-edge medical equipment at competitive prices compared to imported ones.

“Research findings will then be connected to medical equipment-producing industry in the country,” the President said.
