As a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, it is impossible for the Government to ban prayer calls (adhan), abolish religious education, or legalize same-sex marriages and adultery, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has said.

“Don’t be afraid to fight slanders, hoaxes, and fake news,” President Jokowi said in his remarks before the Indonesian Youth Renewal Generation (AMPI) Cadres Meeting at Merdeka Square, Medan, Saturday (16/3).

Unfortunately, he added, a survey said that there are 9 million people who believe in false news and if everyone ignored this condition, more people would believe those hoaxes.

On that occasion, President Jokowi also urged the AMPI cadres to invite their neighbors, friends and families to exercise their voting rights on 17 April 2019. “Don’t let one person to be golput (Indonesian terms for those who leave their ballots unmarked or who do not vote),” he said.

President Jokowi also thanked the AMPI cadres for their participation in guarding the unity of Indonesia and wished them luck in continuing their efforts in maintaining unity of the nation. “Do not let the differences in political choices make us ignore the fact that we are brothers and sisters of one nation and motherland,” he added.
