President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed his cabinet ministers to make a major breakthrough in the fight against COVID-19 that can be seen by the people.

“The breakthrough is expected to have a real impact on controlling the COVID-19 transmission,” the President said in his introductory remarks during a Limited Cabinet Meeting on the Acceleration of the COVID-19 Handling, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (29/6).

The President went on to say that measures to combat COVID-19 can be taken by deploying more healthcare personnel to provinces outside Jakarta that still show high transmission rates.

“We can also increase the supply of medical equipment. If we do not do something to respond to the pandemic, there will not be significant improvements,” the President added.

Furthermore, the President also urged his ministers to monitor regions that begin to implement the new normal. It includes the pre-pandemic conditions, the pertinent time for regions to implement the new normal, the assistance, as well as the guidance from the Central Government.

“We should consider the pre-pandemic conditions, the perfect time, and guidance for priority sectors that will be re-opened,” the President stated.

On that occasion, the President also ordered his ministers to involve religious leaders, community leaders, cultural practitioners, sociologists, and anthropologists in public communication.

“So that the families of deceased COVID-19 patients cannot forcibly take away the dead bodies from hospital. I think it is something we should protect,” the President said.

The President also pointed out that there should be information dissemination before performing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test and rapid COVID-19 test.

“People rejected PCR and rapid COVID-19 tests because authorities suddenly arrived to perform tests without any prior explanations,” the President concluded. (FID / EN)
