President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo congratulated Indonesian badminton players – women’s double pair Greysia Polii/Apriani Rahayu and mixed double pair Tontowi Ahmad/Lilyana Natsir, for their success in winning titles at the 2017 French Open Badminton Super Series tournament on Sunday (29/10).

“Congratulations to Tontowi/Liliyana and Greysia/Apriyani, champions of the 2017 French Open Super Series. They’ve presented a wonderful gift in this Youth Pledge Day,” tweeted the President through his Twitter account @jokowi on Monday (30/10).

As previously reported, at the final held at Pierre de Coubertin stadium in Paris on Sunday (29/10) evening, the unseeded Indonesian women’s double pair surprisingly defeated their opponents from South Korea Lee So-hee/Shin Seung-chan in straight set 21-17 and 21-15 in just 49 minutes.

Their success felt special considering that Indonesia has not produced top women’s double pairs in the international arena, especially in super series tournaments and also because this pair has been formed in only less than a year.

In the meantime, Indonesian top mixed double pair and reigning World Champions Tontowi/Liliyana also kept their consistency by emerging as champion in the same tournament after beating World’s Number One mixed double pair from China Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen in straight set, 22-20 and 21-15. (ES) (EP/YM/Naster)
