President Jokowi Delivers Statement on Myanmar
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo conveyed several important points related to the Myanmar issue at the retreat session of the 41st ASEAN Summit at the Sokha Hotel, Phnom Penh, Friday (11/11).
During the meeting, the participants specifically discussed the implementation of the 5-point consensus (5PC) on Myanmar.
“First, the implementation of the 5PC remains the main reference for the ASEAN in helping Myanmar to overcome its political crisis,” President Jokowi said.
In the second point, President Jokowi underscored the urgency to stop violence in order to immediately create a conducive situation in Myanmar.
The third point delivered by the President is a plan for assignment of the Secretary General of ASEAN and the AHA Center to continue to seek access so that the Comprehensive Needs Assessment can be completed immediately.
According to the President, humanitarian assistance to support life-sustaining measures has become more important at this time.
The fourth point conveyed by the President is that the decision on non-political representation from Myanmar must also be implemented in addition to the AMM and the Summit.
“Fifth, the ASEAN engagement with all Myanmar stakeholders must be carried out immediately. Because only by opening dialogue with all parties will the ASEAN be able to facilitate the national dialogue mandated by the 5PCs,” the President said.
The sixth point, according to the President, is to respect the principle of non-interference, so that the ASEAN does not provide support for elections that are not inclusive and are not prepared based on national dialogue.
“We have a responsibility to the people of the ASEAN and the world. If we don’t act appropriately, then ASEAN’s credibility and its relevance will be at stake,” President Jokowi remarked.
