President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Friday (22/2) distributed 351 waqf land certificates to 12 representatives of residents at Bani Umar Mosque, South Tangerang, Banten Province.

On that occasion, President Jokowi said that the waqf land certificates distribution aims to resolve land disputes that widely occur in Indonesia.

He cited an example of a large mosque in Jakarta which stood on inherited land and after many years, the heirs (of the land) suddenly sued the mosque.

“Unfortunately, the mosque did not have the certificate,” the President said, adding another example of a huge provincial mosque in Sumatera which was sued by the heirs since the land only half-certified.

This is the reason why owning a certificate for waqf land is essential as legal proof of land ownership, the President continued.

President Jokowi in his remarks also explained that the certificate distribution, particularly for mosques and Islamic boarding schools, is being carried out in other provinces as well due to similar problems. (DND/DNS/ES)
