Minister of Religious Affairs Fachrul Razi representing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday (30/7) at Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta handed over qurban (sacrificial) animal to the mosque’s Idul Adha Committee.

“I specifically handed over this sacrificial animal to the High Priest to be slaughtered and the meat to be distributed to the poor and needy,” the Minister said.

Fachrul also suggested that the meat be distributed to those affected by COVID-19 pandemic.

For the record, the President donated ongole-breed cattle from Tulang Bawang, Lampung weighing 1,088 kilograms to Istiqlal mosque. In addition to donating the cattle to Istiqlal Mosque, the President also donated cattle to several regional administrations across the country.

During Idul Adha, Muslims who can afford it are encouraged to perform qurban (sacrifice) in which they buy cows, sheep, or goats to be slaughtered with the meat distributed to the poor and the needy.

Idul Adha is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr), and considered the holier of the two. It honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. (BPMI/EN)
