President Jokowi Encourages Youth to Start Business

Younger generation is expected to swiftly adapt to a fast-changing world in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, according to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The President made the statement at the 2018 Young on Top National Conference at Kartika Expo Balai Kartini, Jakarta, Saturday (25/8).

The President admitted that sometimes it is difficult for him to engage in conversation with youngsters, even with his own son, due to huge age gap.

“Perhaps it is difficult for me to tune in to conversation with all of you,” President Jokowi said, to laughter from the participants.

In the meantime, the President encouraged start-up entrepreneurs to grasp the opportunities emerged from today’s rapid changes, mentioning Jess No Limit –who makes money by playing Mobile Legend– as the example. “We have to quickly grasp the opportunity,” the President said.

President Jokowi further said that today the commodity that people sell is idea. Elon Musk, according to the President, has shown that many investors today are attracted to invest and buy great ideas. Another example, according to the President, is Plug and Play that is available in Indonesia today which is important to provide a good ecosystem for technological development.

The President further said that if we cannot catch up with the latest technological development, we will be left behind. Therefore, President Jokowi continued, Indonesian people have to be open-minded, be able to open up and not be afraid to compete.

President Jokowi also expressed his optimism that Indonesian youth is able to compete with their counterpart from other countries if there is an open opportunity for them.

The President further encouraged the youngsters to quickly set the ideas, determine the type of business they want to do, and set the goals.

Also present during the event were Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko, Head of the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) Triawan Munaf, CEO of Plug and Play Indonesia Wesley Harjono, founder of Young on Top Billy Boen, and TV Host Andy Noya.
