President Jokowi, Foreign Minister of PRC Discuss Economic Cooperation

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (02/22) received a courtesy call from Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Qin Gang, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

For the record, the courtesy call paid by Mr. Qin Gang is also the first official visit since his appointment at the end of last year.

The meeting underscored the importance of economic cooperation enhancement that will be mutually beneficial for both countries. In this regard, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi who accompanied President Jokowi in that meeting said that PRC is Indonesia’s biggest trade partner.

During that meeting, President Jokowi asked his counterpart to join hands in enhancing cooperation on strategic sectors in both countries, such as the completion of Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, development of green industrial park in Kalimantan, development of Nusantara Capital, and development of downstreaming industry in Indonesia.

“Foreign Minister of PRC affirmed his commitment to further strengthen relations or enhance economic cooperation with Indonesia and to boost imports from Indonesia particularly its agricultural products,” the Minister said.

President Jokowi also highlighted the important role played by Indonesia and PRC to promote peace and stability in the region. According to him, economic development will not be possible without a peaceful and stable region.

“In that meeting, Foreign Minister of PRC also expressed his tremendous support for Indonesia’s ASEAN chairmanship,” Retno said. (BPMI of Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (RAS/HD/MMB)
