President Jokowi Gives Instruction on Buildings Renovation in Wamena

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) to immediately renovate damaged government offices and public facilities caused by riot that erupted in the city of Wamena in the Indonesian eastern province of Papua.

For this reason, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono ensured that the Ministry will cooperate with the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) in handling this matter for faster renovation.

“There are 10 government offices that were severely damaged, such as the regional secretariat office, Financial Management Agency office, Agency for Regional Development office, the Inspectorate office, Information and Communication office,  the Municipal Police office, the Environmental Agency office, the State Electricity Company (PLN) office, Religious Affairs office and the Transportation Agency office. Those were severely damaged,” Basuki told reporters after attending an internal meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Tuesday (8/10).

Meanwhile, according to the Minister, 34 government buildings were slightly damaged, consisting of eight offices and 26 educational facilities. In addition, there are 450 shops as well as 165 houses that are damaged as well.

President Jokowi, Basuki stated, has instructed all of these (damaged buildings) to be repaired by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. In the process, he added, the Ministry will cooperate with local entrepreneurs and the TNI using local materials.

According to him, the Ministry has sent the R&D team to audit the construction. Based on the report, most buildings only suffered damaged on their roofs thus can be handled faster. (FID/ES)
