On the sidelines of his working visit in Bangka Belitung province, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo on Thursday (14/3) paid a blusukan (impromptu visit) to Pangkal Pinang traditional market, Pangkal Pinang.

On his arrival at the market, the locals gathered and welcomed the President. Then, the President gave them an opportunity to take a photo with him.  “I happened to be passing through the market,” he said, adding that he also bought some staples in the market.

On that occasion, President Jokowi said that the market is one of those that will be revitalized.

Furthermore, the market is in quite good condition and he suggested that sanitation and drainage must be continuously maintained in order to keep it clean.

During the visit, President Jokowi also said that Bangka Belitung Province must be able to strengthen their tourism sector and not entirely depend on mining alone because it will eventually run out.

“The Government has just inaugurated the Tanjung Kelayang Tourism Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and there are two more SEZs to go,” the President said.

In addition to tourism, President Jokowi also urged the regional government to promote investment. “There have been a lot of investments coming in Tanjung Kelayang,” he said, adding that some investments in a form of hotel had begun their construction phase.

For the record, President Jokowi has long been known for his signature ‘blusukan’ style in the middle of his tight schedule to directly meet the people. (UN/RAH/ES)
