President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo handed over a total aid of Rp264 billion for renovation projects to 5,293 houses affected by the earthquake, in Pemenang Baru Village, Pemenang Subdistrict, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, Sunday (2/9) afternoon.

Such aid was provided in the form of savings, with details of Rp50 million for severely damaged houses, Rp25 million and Rp10 million for moderately and lightly damaged houses respectively.

The President expressed his hope that the money is to be spent for rebuilding houses damaged by the earthquake some time ago.

“If it turns out that the renovation of the house does not reach the maximum cost provided, then, alhamdulillah, you may use it for other needs, but the money is prioritized for rebuilding the house,” the President firmly said.

The President also suggested to adopt earthquake-resistant house design in rebuilding the damaged homes.

According to the President, the Government through Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, assisted by the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), will provide assistance to the society.

“We are aware that there was also a huge earthquake here in 1979. What does that mean? The houses to be built will have to be earthquake-resistant, so that if there is an earthquake again, the house will be earthquake-resistant,” the President said.

The President also reminded the society to continue to work together and utilize building materials that could still be used, so the aid provided by the Government would really be enough to rebuild the houses.

“We want the damaged houses to be built as quickly as possible. Therefore, all relevant parties must work hard, work together as it will soon enter the rainy season. At least the roof has been built, so it can be used to take shelter if the rainy season has arrived,” the President said.

Accompanying the President on the occasion were Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Social Affairs Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, the TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, the Polri Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, and NTB Governor Zainul Majdi.(Bureau of Press, Media, & Information, Presidential Secretariat/ES)(MUR/MMB/YM/Naster).
