Hutan-Sosial-300x200As many as 160 thousand hectares of land in West Java province could be used by residents for social forestry programs, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said.

“Only 10,100 hectares of land have been distributed to the residents. It’s still a very small number,” the President said during a handover ceremony of Forest Utilization Permit to the residents and community groups in Djuanda Forest Park in Bandung, West Java, Sunday (11/11).

On the occasion, President Jokowi handed over 14 decrees of Permits for Utilization of Social Forestry Forest (IPHPS), covering an area of ??2,943 hectares for 2,252 household heads as well as 23 decrees of the Recognition and Protection of Forestry Partnership Scheme (KULIN KK) with an area of ??5,674 hectares for 3,207 household heads.

Under the Decision of Minister of the Environment and Forestry, the permit is valid for 35 years.

“It will expire after 35 years. If you want to renew it, please do it; yet, the legal umbrella must be clear. You must have the permit,” the President said.

The President also expressed hope that after obtaining the permit, the residents can make use of the existing land in a productive way, for example by planting horticultural products such as fruits; yet he advised them to plant trees that can produce products with higher profits and better selling prices.

“As West Java Governor said earlier, do focus on leading products such as coffee with a high export price. Don’t sell it at a low price,” the President said.  (FID/ES).
