President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Monday (09/04) held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of Cook Islands, Mark Brown, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

At the meeting, PM Mark Brown extended his appreciation to Indonesia for encouraging ASEAN to have  closer relations with the Pacific region.

“The Prime Minister of the Cook Islands congratulated Indonesia for bringing ASEAN closer to the Pacific region,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi said in her statement after the meeting.

The two leaders also witnessed the signing of the collaboration between the ASEAN Secretariat and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretariat.

For the record, PM Mark Brown attended the 43rd ASEAN Summit in his capacity as a Chairperson of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).

“This afternoon, a cooperation agreement was signed between the ASEAN Secretariat and the PIF Secretariat. This is part of the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, initiated by Indonesia in 2019 and implemented during Indonesia’s chairmanship by involving IORA and PIF and conducting the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum,” Retno said.

According to Retno, PM Mark Brown expressed his support for the issue of sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries.

“The Prime Minister stated that the top priority for the PIF is to discuss development priorities with its partner countries,” the Foreign Minister remarked. (BPMI SETPRES/UN) (RI/MMB)
