President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, on Wednesday afternoon (11/5), made an impromptu visit to Terminal 3 Ultimate of Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

According to the President, the visit was aimed at overseeing whether or not the terminal can be used for the upcoming the Ied Day holiday.

“Before the Ied Day Holiday, we hope the terminal can be used. Therefore, I want to ensure its readiness. However, seeing the progress, I suppose, Insha Allah, the terminal will be ready,” President Jokowi said.

President Jokowi went on to say that in terms of capacity, Soekarno-Hatta Airport is still not adequate yet. Thus, he said that once the construction of the terminal is finished, he promised he would instruct Minister of State-owned Enterprises to begin constructing other terminals and it is also aimed at supporting economic growth in the future.

“We have to directly build Terminal 4. If we do not make quick moves, the existing terminals will not be enough. Besides building terminals, it is more important to increase the runways,” the President said.

President Jokowi also mentioned the Government’s railway project that will connect Soekarno Hatta Airport with other cities and is expected to be in operation in early 2017.

President Jokowi noted that the Government would build mass transport systems not only in major cities but also in the regions, such as in Palembang, which is connected with the airport by the LRT (light rail transit) system.

“In the regions, it will be the same .We will prioritize mass transport system to support the development of a city,” the President said.

In the meantime, Budi Karya, President Director of State-owned Airport Operator PT. Angkasa Pura II, said that the construction of Terminal 3 is already 98 percent finished and is expected to be completed on 26 May 2016.

“It’s already 98 percent finished. We hope the construction is finished on 26 May. National Carrier Garuda Indonesia still has a two-week trial (at the Terminal),” Budi said, adding that PT. Angkasa Pura would propose to the President to inaugurate the new terminal on 15 June.
