President Jokowi Hosts US Congresspersons at Merdeka Palace

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Wednesday (05/03) hosted eight congresspersons of the United States at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

In the press statement after accompanying President Jokowi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi stated that the meeting discussed several issues, including the importance of increasing equal partnership between the two countries.

“Partnerships which are based on equality and produce win-win cooperation are highly encouraged by both countries,” Retno said.

In addition, the meeting also discussed the importance of limited free trade agreement between Indonesia and the US in the near future. Quoting President Jokowi’s statement, Retno stated that Indonesia is ready to start discussing the agreement.

“President Jokowi also expressed hope that the US will continue to provide support for the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific,” the Minister said, adding that the President also expressed his appreciation for the United States’ support for Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN.

On the occasion, the Head of State also underscored the importance of market access and non-discriminatory treatment of Indonesian export goods to the US and expected that Indonesia could become part of the US’ and global supply chain.

“President Jokowi also expressed hope that Indonesia will retain its status as beneficiary of [the US’] Generalized System of Preferences (GSP),” the Minister remarked. (BPMI Presidential Secretariat/AIT) (GWH/MUR)
