Quake-resistant houses are very important in a quake-prone Lombok island, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.

“We must be aware that Lombok is located in a quake-prone area, so we need to build quake-resistant houses,” President Jokowi said when inspecting the Disbursement of House Stimulant Funds in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Friday (22/3).

The President added that he has ordered several Ministers of the Cabinet to quickly complete the houses’ reconstruction after the quake hit Lombok in August last year. The house development procedures, he said,  have been simplified from seventeen steps to four steps ever since.

President Jokowi went on to say that the quake-resistant houses built in Lombok survived another quake that occurred on 17 March, during which non quake-resistant houses collapsed. He added that Lombok is blessed with fertile soil and beautiful beaches and nature despite the fact that it is located in a quake-prone area.

“We must accept the reality. After quake-resistant houses are finished in the future, God willing, we can all live harmoniously with the nature,” the President said, adding that Lombok residents might choose different type of quake-resistant houses.

For the record, President Jokowi on Friday (22/3) paid a working visit to the resort island of Lombok to inspect the post-quake reconstruction and meet with the recipients of the Government’s relief funds. (DND/EN)
