President Jokowi Inaugurates Asmat’s Ewer Airport
The newly-revamped Ewer Airport in Asmat regency, South Papua province is expected to encourage the development and progress of the province, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said.
“The completion of the airport will help Asmat regency to develop and make progress. We also hope that the economy in Asmat regency in South Papua province will generally get better,” said the President after the inauguration of Ewer Airport, Thursday (06/07).
The President added that Ewer Airport is ready to serve the transportation needs of the people in Asmat regency, improve inter-regional connectivity, and enhance the flow of goods and people.
“This is very important (to improve) connectivity between areas, districts, provinces or islands, because it will accelerate the mobility of people and the movement of goods, and it will open isolation and speed up logistical shipment,” he said.
For the record, Ewer Airport has a runway of 1,650 meters and serves ATR 72 aircraft. The existence of this airport, said the President, also has the potential to boost the tourism sector in the region.
“Earlier I received a report that now, every week there are two flights from Timika, four flights a week from Kamur, and four flights a week from Merauke. This will boost Asmat tourism,” he said. (TGH/UN) (EST/MMB)
