President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday (31/12) inaugurated Kamijoro Dam located in Kulon Progo regency in Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Province.

“Kamijoro Dam, which is built in Progo River, is vital to support food security as it provides sustainable water supply to support community agricultural activities, provides irrigation for 2,370 hectares of agricultural land, and increases cropping intensity from 205% to 270%,” the President said.

According to the President, Kamijoro Dam is also very important for the availability of raw water for Yogyakarta International Airport, for the regencies of Bantul and Kulon Progo, as well as the Yogyakarta province as a whole.

“Kamijoro Dam is very beautiful. There are also a playground, a plaza, and  several tourist attractions,” the President said, adding that the dam also has a bridge connecting Bantul regency with Kulon Progo regency.

“It cuts travel time since the bridge cuts a distance of approximately five kilometers,” he said.

President Jokowi also expressed hope that the dam, whose construction began in 2016, can bring benefits for the surrounding communities.

“(With the operation of the dam), farmers are expected to be more prosperous and small businesses can make use of both sides of the dam. We also hope the people’s income will increase as many tourists will come here,” the President said.
