President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Thursday (01/19) inaugurated Kuwil Kawangkoan Dam located in North Minahasa regency, North Sulawesi province.

“The Kuwil Kawangkoan Dam started its construction in 2016, meaning that it has been five and a half years. With a budget of Rp1.9 trillion, the Dam has a capacity of 26 million cubic meters, with an inundation area of 157 hectares,” the President said.

Not only for the purposes of irrigation of agricultural land, according to the President, the Dam will also serve to reduce floods in the region.

“If we do not block [the water] here, the water will keep flowing and cause North Sulawesi provincial capital Manado to flood. As we remember, in 2014, Manado was hit by a flash flood,” he said, adding that the Dam can also serve as a micro-hydro power plant.

“It produces 2 x 0.70 megawatts of electricity. Even though it is small, it can become a micro-hydro power plant,” he remarked.

Unlike the previous dam inauguration, at today’s inauguration, there were also a number of enthusiastic students from elementary, middle, and high schools welcoming the President. On the occasion, the President also directly communicated with several students.

After the inauguration, the President and his limited entourage spread fish seeds in the Dam. (TGH/UN) (FI/MUR)
