On the way to Menak Sopal helipad in Trenggalek regency, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo Tuesday (30/11) took the time to inspect Pon market. On that occasion, President Jokowi signed an inscription to mark the inauguration of the market that has finished its revitalization.

According to the written press statement by Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, traditional market revitalization is carried out to improve market’s functions as a facility for purchasing and selling so that it will become a safe, comfortable, clean, and well-organized building.

“It is our hope that good quality market infrastructure can bring benefits including ensuring staple food distribution and evenly driving the real sector or MSMEs throughout Indonesia,” Basuki said.

For the record, Pon market was damaged by fire in 2018 and it has been rebuilt since 10 January 2020. The construction of the market has been 100 percent completed and its management has been handed over to the regional government of Trenggalek regency on 9 February 2021.

Adopting the concept of classic victorian architecture blended with local architecture style, Pon market occupies an area of 12 thousand square meters, with total building area of 5,800 square meters. It has 479 stalls, and provides open space for 310 traders.

The revitalization of Pon market is regulated in Presidential Regulation number 43 of 2019 which also regulates the revitalization of East Klewer market in Surakarta city, Sukawati market in Gianyar regency, Legi market in Ponorogo regency, Kaliwungu market in Kendal regency, Renteng market in Central Lombok regency, Pariaman market in Pariaman city, Legi market in Surakarta city, and Benteng Pancasila market in Mojokerto city.

The revitalization of the market is also expected to support the acceleration of local economic recovery affected by COVID-19 pandemic.

After inspecting the market for about 15 minutes, President Jokowi and his entourage headed to the helipad then took off to Iswahjudi Air Force Base in Magetan regency. (Presidential Secretariat/UN) (AP/MMB)
